Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023
Château de Beaucastel has long been regarded as one of the greatest wines in France. It is notorious for its elegance, balance, and ageing potential, with an exceptional terroir at the northern limit of Châteauneuf du Pape, exposed to the Mistral wind. All 13 varieties of the appellation have been organically grown here since the 1960s. This wine is a blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah, 10% Counoise, 10% Roussanne, 5% Cinsault, and the remaining 10% a mix of Vaccarèse, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul, Picardan, and Bourboulenc. The 2023 vintage was fairly warm and dry, producing perfectly ripe fruit which still retained freshness. The Mourvèdre and Syrah grapes were vinified in oak fermenters while the other varieties were fermented in concrete tanks. Once alcoholic and malolactic fermentation were complete, the varieties were then blended together. This was then aged in oak foudres (large barrels) for a year before being bottled. Powerful, generous, and complex with aromas of black fruit and violet. Full-bodied, silky, and perfectly balanced, it's a refined and harmonious wine. Delicious with hearty meat dishes, stews, or tagine.
