Boekenhoutskloof 'The Chocolate Block' 2022/23 Magnum, Western Cape
The Chocolate Block has long been a cult favourite at Majestic. It’s made by Boekenhoutskloof, who were named South Africa’s ‘Winery of the Year 2020’. Their winemaker, Marc Kent, is tight-lipped about how exactly this wine is made – but that only adds to its mystique. He tweaks the blend slightly with every vintage so no two Chocolate Blocks are quite the same. But it’s always a blend of rich and ripe varieties: Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon – with a touch of Viognier for added perfume. Full and round, this wine is bursting with ripe raspberry and blackcurrant flavours alongside leather, earth, chocolate and spice. It's most at home when enjoyed with spice-rubbed steaks, roast rib of beef, or game dishes.
